Having it on a weekday helps promote the idea of having more green space in our cities and towns - not just as large parks where we can spend an entire Saturday - but as spaces where we can take a short rest while on a break from work, or walking to the subway or bus, or to chat with neighbors or friends. If your work conflicts with this event, try to find a space near your office or home to have some coffee or take a quick break in: http://parkingdaynyc.org/spots Park(ing) Day is an international event, and to be honest I am not sure who initially scheduled this date.
